Rugby Disability Forum – Minutes of an Ordinary meeting held at Hamilton House at 10:00 am on Tuesday 31st May 2005

Present: Gloria Lawley Ord, Pam Jones, Pat Clarke, Joyce Carter, Sheena Corbett, Mark Offord, Clem Griffiths, Diane Enefer, Robert Adams, Helen Adams, Ian Haxton, C. 1. Minutes of 26th April meeting

Marion Hersey advised that her surname was incorrectly spelt. Pam Jones advised that she had been missed off the attendance list.

 

2. Presentation by Warwickshire Police (Harry Mossop)

Harry showed a video highlighting problems when con-men call at people’s houses particularly distraction burglary and what you should do when strangers call. The Police have various information leaflets, stickers/pens which they promote and are available free. Smartwater – which is a positive step against crime, can be purchased for £24 or £12 if you are in a ‘neighbourhood watch scheme’. David asked if the Police could let Forum members also have the discount. Harry also demonstrated different personal alarms which are available at a cost of £2 and £2.50p. David thanked Harry for his informative presentation.

Action: Harry to check price of Alarms for the Forum

 

3. Matters Arising

(a) Funding – is it necessary to obtain a Licence to:

collect money/goods door-to-door

street collections of money either in plastic tubs or buckets

Action: JB to report back to next meeting.

(b) Wheelchair Race

Steve has two sponsors for wheelchairs, Hinckley & Rugby Building Society (also donated £50) and Brown & Cockerell Estate Agents. CVS are lending display stands.

Posters – now finished if members wish to place these in prominent positions they are free in A4 or A3 size.

David Wright will attend in place of Councillor Humphreys who has a previous engagement.

Printers – 3 prices obtained. Steers Printing have agreed to do it for cost ie £200.

Trophy and medals – Rugby College.

Presenting Prizes – Sally Wagner from parapedic basketball – team has agreed to attend and do this.

Local car dealers being approached to see if they will chauffeur people around.

Steve suggested a sub-committee meeting needed as soon as possible.

New MP for Rugby – Jeremy Wright has agreed to participate.

Acton: All - Steve does need some help with organising this event. Members who are interested should contact David on 01788 544991.

 

Shop Watch

This went very well. 91 businesses were surveyed. 6 said they wouldn’t do anything. David is still analysing the results, has spoken to the press and will report to our next meeting. David thanked everyone who participated, particularly Pat for organising the event.

Robin Richter advised that we have come a long way in a short time and business owners are certainly more aware of what is expected. David thanked Robin for his continued help and support.

Clem offered to go back to Speedy Sew to advise that their portable ramp should not be left on the pavement.

Library side entrance – David advised that it has been established that the tactile paving was not needed and it is to be replaced with ordinary paving in contrasting colour to the adjacent paving so as to define the route to the main entrance door. Members thanked everyone involved in resolving this.

Hate Crime – it was suggested an A5 ring-bound booklet would be useful. Carolyn to investigate.

PPI Project – work completed by supporting officer. The Annual General Meeting, is at Betts Hall, Age concern, Clifton Road at 6pm on Wednesday 8th June when the work plan will be agreed – everyone is welcome. Martin, Diane Enefer and David agreed to attend.

 

4. Caribbean Carnival 23rd July

The theme this year is “Cohesion in the Community and Fair Trade”. Members of the Forum were asked to join in the procession. Starts at Cattle Market at 1pm and slowly moves through the town. David, Martin and Steve will attend and Gloria is to try and drum up support. There will be a small charge for ‘tombola’ stall. Agreed to put this item on the agenda for the next meeting.

 

5. Any Other Business

(a) Computer Course 7th June at Hill Street Community Centre every Thursday at 10am for 7 weeks. Pat, Anne, Martin, Pam and Diane have signed up. Gloria expressed an interest. David to check although he was aware of problems with space.

(b) Members were advised that crossings on dual carriageways do not have beep warnings.

(c) Problems with boards in Clifton Road – David advised that only the paved footway is highway, the forecourts are privately owned. Members should ring Paul Cowley at the Town Hall.

(d) John Burrell advised that his new surveyor will commence work on 1st June and he will recommence visiting commercial premises in the town to give advice on DDA responsibilities. A committee meeting is to be arranged to discuss future strategy.

(e) Police spot – nothing to report.

(f) David and John attended a meeting at the Town Hall about Hackney Taxies, Jack’s concerns are to be included in the consultant’s final report.

(g) Steve advised that the Forum is now affiliated to the Rugby Area Community Education Council and is looking into whether we can apply to them for funding.

(h) Paul Tolley is making other Groups aware of the existence of the Forum and the excellent work we are doing.

(i) Age Concern are having a ‘Have Your Say’ meeting on Wednesday 29th June commencing at 10.30am and finishing at 12 o’clock – everyone is welcome. Please contact Emily Woodward on 01926 412940 if you would like to attend.

(j) G K H Coaches – Tel 01788 521818 have a mini bus taxi seating 16 people which has a tailgate lift ideal for small group outings.

(k) Have your say about Warwickshire Social Services – there are to be surgeries at Age Concern between 5pm and 7pm on 10th, 17th and 24th June and 8th, 15th and 22nd July. Surgeries for the new MP, (Jeremy Wright) will be held at Age Concern on Fridays between 5 & 7 pm. On 10, 17, 24 June and 8, 15, 22 July.
