MINUTES OF A MEETING HELD AT HAMILTON HOUSE, TUESDAY 30TH MAY 2006 AT 10.00 A.M.

1. David welcomed everyone and especially the visitors from Warwick Disability Group, introductions were made.

2. Presentation by Clem Griffiths “ Rugby Sports for Disabled People”. Clem advised that the Club had 80 members (50% are able bodied people). The Club are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year and membership costs £4.00 per year plus entrance to Ken Marriott Leisure Centre, which is 60p per session.

Meetings are held at the KMLC every Saturday morning between 9.00 a.m. and 12 o’clock. 9.00 – 11.00 in pool (ramps and hoists available to gain access), 9.00 – 12.00 various sports taking place (currently swimming, archery/cross-bow, darts, table tennis, new edge curling, short mat bowls and long mat bowls in Thornfield Club. Also a variety of board games such as dominos, draughts etc. Outside the centre the club are involved in raft water rafting at Stratford (7 mile race with able bodied and disabled people). The club hold an annual full day of sports events, which is organised and sponsored by the Rotary Club. Similar events are visited on away trips throughout the Midlands.

In November the Rotary Club organise team games, where teams throughout the County take part.

The Club is a social as well as sports club and holds regular skittles evenings and swim nights where they take over the pool for the evening. Jamaican evenings have proved very popular, as well as the annual Christmas Party. The Club is involved in the Town’s twinning celebrations with Russelsheim. Funds are needed to finance these initiatives and come mainly from a Christmas market and local quiz nights. A quarterly newsletter is sent to members advising of future/present events.

A vote of thanks was given to Clem and his colleagues for doing a wonderful job.

JB went through the minutes of the meeting held on 9th May. Richard Marrs is to give presentation to the Forum in November.

10. Any Other Business

i) JB read the content of the letter sent to Disability Rights Commission following the Disability Debate and the subsequent reply from the DRC. The consensus was that the reply was inadequate and failed to recognise its own low achievement.

Warwickshire Police Independent Advisory Group

JB also advised members that Warwickshire Police were looking for representatives from the disabled community to become members of this Group. This is a group that express their own views and experiences which contribute to finding ways of improving policing services to meet the needs of all sections of the community. David Foster is to represent the Forum.

iii) DF advised that Warwickshire Police have provided a copy of a draft policy on “dealing with prisoners with mobility, hearing, speech and sight disabilities” for comment.

iv) Rugby Race and Disability Conference – was a great success thanks to everyone who attended/helped organise.

v) Signs outside Post Office causing obstructions on pavement (DF).

vi) DVD of last years wheelchair race is nearly complete and Steve will arrange a viewing at the Cinema.

vii) Steve asked for help from three members to complete a questionnaire for his college project.
