on Tuesday 31st March 2009

David welcomed everyone and everyone introduced themselves.

Presentation by Emily and Tracey from Rugby Borough Council

Bin Waste Recycling System

The Council collects glass, cans, paper etc. from over 38,000 homes.  The benefit of the new system is that it will reduce landfill.

Green bin – garden waste, food, meat / fish

Black bin – cling film, polystyrene, cat litter (non recyclable waste)

Blue bin – glass, cans, rigid plastic, jars, aerosols

From 20th April green bin one week and black bin the next.  Depending on where you live the blue bin will be collected every other week.

Green and Blue bins contents are recycled.  Black bin goes to landfill.  Details are to be publicised on radio, leaflets through doors etc.

          Q.     -     What will happen in ShelteredHousing/Flats?

          A.     -     These will be dealt with on an individual basis after initial launch.

          Q.     -     How does a person with poor visibility distinguish different bins?

          A.     -     The top of all bins have a raised recycle logo.

          Q.     -     What are you doing about pull-out bins – contractor needs to position bins appropriately?

          A.     -     Will look into this however if the bin is readily accessible they will come and fetch it.

          Q.     -     Do you get paid for waste you collect?

         A.     -     Rugby Borough Council gets recycling credits and it pays for itself.

David thanked Emily and Tracey an interesting presentation.

Presentation by Sue McKenzie from Rugby Mind

Sue advised that there are very few people in this Country who do not suffer from mental health problems.  If your mental well being is poor your physical health will suffer.  Don’t  isolate yourself and don’t let people isolate you.  Talk to someone and share experiences – a problem shared is a problem solved.

Many GP’s do not know about mental health problems or where to go to get help.

Depression can be treated without medication by getting together with people (attending group meetings) and talking about how they are and how they are living – everyone feels down at some stage in their lives.  Share emotions.

          Q.     -     It is difficult to know whether someone with depression is just putting it on?

A It helps take someone along with you.

David thanked Sue for an interesting presentation and suggested people should get Gordon’s (MIND) magazine.  If you have a problem, share it.  Write to Gordon Boyle who is the editor at Rugby Users News, c/o Rugby Mind, 28 Cromwell Road, Rugby. Tel.No. 01788 570826.  Everything is strictly confidential.

5.      Reports

Committee – Pedestrianisation of Rugby – long serious discussion.  Don’t want buses in Regent Street which removes Option 1 & 2.  Prefer one way travel along Church Street/North Street.  Suggest a rising post from Macdonalds to North Street.  Therefore Option 3 preferred with above included.

RNIB Conference in Birmingham – Pat gave details of the day which her and Marie attended.  It was very interesting and enjoyable.

Walsgrave Hospital Parking – Derek gave an update on what has happened since our last meeting.  Ticket machine is to be altered to give easier access to getting a ticket.  A facility is to be provided to the disabled car park entrance to call for assistance if required.  A wheelchair collection system to be provided in areas of the car park (similar to supermarket trolleys) and the entrance to the hospital.  This will be a coin slot system to ensure people bring them back.  Quarterly meetings are to be held between the Hospital Project Director and Derek.

6.      Update on Projects – Derek attended the Warwickshire Stronger Communities meeting – was a waste of time as far as disabled people are concerned.

NHS at Rugby St.Cross – anyone who has a problem with access to let David know.

Rugby Ambulance Service – won’t take anyone on higher rate of disability.  David is on the case and in discussion with them.
